Hallowe’en Countdown 2015–Candy Protocol!

candy tootsie 6_28 _ 2015I asked some of my friends what their favorite and most-hated candies to receive on Hallowe’en were and was there a “sorting” protocol when they got back home.

I got some fun answers, for instance( they are listed by their nicknames):

Uncle Steve: I hated BB Bats. They always were like a brick of taffy on a stick and nearly pulled out your teeth.

MC: Best: anything full-size. Worst: smarties and mints. Worse than worst: raisins!

Captain Crunch: Best: mounds bars or Hershey’s with almonds Worst? Worse candy??? There is no bad candy, silly girl! (Well, maybe bit o honey….)

Tinkerbell: Mom went through candy, took out log things, yuck and black licorice. Some good stuff,,but let us have most of it.

I asked what log things where and she replied,”They looked like logs of wood and were crunchy”. I am thinking they were Chick-O-Sticks.

As indicated by the little drawing, my favorite was and still is a Tootsie Roll, even the little fruity ones. Those would be carefully saved and rationed…in the candy drawer.
Yes, we had a “candy drawer” in the house where I grew up; it was a strange extra drawer on the opposite side of the kitchen countertop where there was a bar. There, my brother and I were allowed to keep “our” candy and snacks. Once we got home from Trick or Treating, my dad would usually check our candy, and usually pilfer stuff that he liked. I can’t remember what he would take–usually a Snickers or two, I think, and my mom would take the M&M’s. Anything weird they would pitch, and popcorn balls also were automatically detonated/thrown away. Once I got an apple, and it looked…bad. Sometimes I wonder if neighbors just gave us crap out of their kitchen that they didn’t want to just throw away.

Halloween Countdown 2015: Bean-Boozled Jelly Beans from Jelly Belly!

Ah, jelly beans from Jelly Belly; they’re the only jelly beans I will eat, and I love them. I used to keep a jar of blueberry and cherry ones in my room as a teen, and they were precious commodities, since I didn’t drive yet and had to wait until I was at the flea market with the candy booth on weekend errands with my dad to get a new bag of them.
That was in the 80’s. Now, these once  innocent beans have taken a more lopsided and even sinister tone in today’s climate. In a never-ending quest to get edgy, Jelly Belly produced Bertie Bott’s Every Flavor Beans from the Harry Potter Franchise, which has produced such gut-wrenching flavors as Booger,Dirt, Earthworm, Earwax, Grass, Rotten Egg, Sausage, Soap, and Vomit. Now they have upped the ante a notch or two and unveiled the Jelly Belly Beanboozled series. For instance, the black Licorice bean looks exactly like the Skunk Spray bean and sweet Caramel Corn might also be Moldy Cheese. It gets more interesting by making a game out of it, and the box I bought here is a sort of gift box/board game box complete with a spinner!

Happy Life Day 2015!

My husband and I and our circle of friends are members of costuming groups The 501st and The Rebel Legion. In a nutshell, we are extreme Star Wars nerds. So my husband and I have begun a tradition, now  in its second year, of celebrating our own version of Life Day in tribute (or perhaps mocking admiration) or The Star Wars Holiday Special. We have our friends over and eat and drink(no alcohol) all day on a day not long after Christmas, and watch the horrific madness that is the Holiday Special. (if you want to look it up on YouTube, you’re on your own.)
