I got some fun answers, for instance( they are listed by their nicknames):
Uncle Steve: I hated BB Bats. They always were like a brick of taffy on a stick and nearly pulled out your teeth.
MC: Best: anything full-size. Worst: smarties and mints. Worse than worst: raisins!
Captain Crunch: Best: mounds bars or Hershey’s with almonds Worst? Worse candy??? There is no bad candy, silly girl! (Well, maybe bit o honey….)
Tinkerbell: Mom went through candy, took out log things, yuck and black licorice. Some good stuff,,but let us have most of it.
I asked what log things where and she replied,”They looked like logs of wood and were crunchy”. I am thinking they were Chick-O-Sticks.
As indicated by the little drawing, my favorite was and still is a Tootsie Roll, even the little fruity ones. Those would be carefully saved and rationed…in the candy drawer.
Yes, we had a “candy drawer” in the house where I grew up; it was a strange extra drawer on the opposite side of the kitchen countertop where there was a bar. There, my brother and I were allowed to keep “our” candy and snacks. Once we got home from Trick or Treating, my dad would usually check our candy, and usually pilfer stuff that he liked. I can’t remember what he would take–usually a Snickers or two, I think, and my mom would take the M&M’s. Anything weird they would pitch, and popcorn balls also were automatically detonated/thrown away. Once I got an apple, and it looked…bad. Sometimes I wonder if neighbors just gave us crap out of their kitchen that they didn’t want to just throw away.
